Surely What Love Is

You don’t know what love us until you’ve borne
Our griefs, and carried our sorrows; until you’ve
Learned the meanings of our transgressions. The
Blues were wounded for a love you’ve had to lose.
How lips hurt, bruised for our iniquities; you’ve
Kissed and had to pay the cost, the chastisement
Of our lost heart. For love that cannot live, yet
Never dies, was upon him, and surely he faced
Each dawn with sleepless eyes.
